On the island of Tenerife, there are several protected designations of origin (PDO), determined by geographical and climatic characteristics, and by the variety of grape. On our website, you can find different wine tastings belonging to these appellations of origin. Below, we highlight some of the main differences between the various Tenerife appellations of origin.

  • Tacoronte-Acentejo: This protected designation of origin is found in northern Tenerife; it covers municipalities such as Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza de Acentejo, and part of La Laguna and Tegueste. It is characterised by its Atlantic climate with maritime influences and volcanic soils. The predominant grape varieties are Listán Negro and Listán Blanco, although other types are also grown, including Negramoll, Malvasía, and Moscatel.
  • Valle de La Orotava: Covering the valley of the same name in the north of the island, this protected designation of origin includes municipalities such as La Orotava, Los Realejos, and Puerto de la Cruz. The area’s altitude and cool climate favours the cultivation of varieties such as Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, Negramoll, and Malvasía. The volcanic soils and the orientation of the slopes also influence the characteristics of the wines.
  • Ycoden-Daute-Isora: This protected designation of origin covers the north-western area of Tenerife, including municipalities such as Icod de los Vinos, Garachico, Los Silos, Buenavista del Norte, and part of Santiago del Teide. The vineyards are located on volcanic slopes and basalt soils. The main varieties are Listán Negro, Negramoll, Malvasía, and Moscatel.
  • Abona: Taking in the south of Tenerife, this protected designation of origin stretches over municipalities such as Arico, Arona, Adeje, and Vilaflor. The climate here is hotter and drier than in the north, so the varieties that thrive here include Listán Blanco, Listán Negro, Malvasía, Moscatel, and Negramoll. The soils are mostly volcanic and stony.
  • Valle de Güímar: This protected designation of origin covers south-eastern Tenerife, including the municipalities of Güímar, Candelaria, and Arafo. The area has a hot, dry climate, influenced by the sea and the mountainous landscape. The most common grape varieties are Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, Negramoll, and Malvasía.
  • Islas Canarias: This protected designation of origin (PDO) is of voluntary affiliation, and includes various family-owned wineries in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Lanzarote, and El Hierro, reflecting the archipelago’s rich wine-growing culture.

In our tasting room, we offer a rotating selection of around fifteen wines which we change every fortnight, and so by following the advice of our professional staff, any novice can find a Tenerife wine that they like and enjoy.
Once a bottle has been opened, it should be sealed with a stopper and kept in the fridge, in an upright position. The wine is best consumed soon after opening, while it is still fresh.
Casa del Vino offers a range of wine and food tasting experiences. On our website, you can find out about the three types of tasting sessions of wines and local products we offer daily—in addition to occasional workshops led by our sommeliers, where you can taste and learn about Tenerife wines.
Of course. We can offer several options for wine tasting in Tenerife, or other types of tasting sessions, for private events. For more information, please contact: casadelvino@teneriferural.org
